Fishing Derby
Home Up Derby 2007 Derby 2008

Each May (usually the Sunday after Mother's Day), the Tilton-Northfield Rotary club holds a youth fishing derby at the Tilton School pond on School street in Tilton. The club stocks the pond with hundreds of brook and lake trout, some over 20" long!

The derby is free for all local youth up to age 15.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. The fishing begins at 9 a.m. with a staggered start - the youngest kids getting a head start.

There are prizes for age categories (1-6, 7-11, and 12-15).

To help offset the cost of putting on the Derby, the club sells raffle tickets (prizes include an assortment of fishing gear and supplies) and the club sells food during the morning of the Derby.

Thanks to the efforts of Rotarians Harry Laughy and Frank Tibbetts, this event has been held for over 30 years. We now have second and third generation kids learning to fish at our Derby.

In December of 2004, our dear friend and fishing derby founder, Harry Laughy, passed away. Despite this loss, the club was able to keep the derby going. In memory of Harry, several fish were tagged in 2005 for a special prize. The winner of "I caught Harry" received a large trophy and $50 Main Street dollars.

Sadly, in February 2006, another dear friend and fishing derby founder, Frank Tibbetts, passed away. While the fishing derby is just not the same without these two beloved fishing enthusiasts, the club is working hard to maintain the derby and the memory of its long time friends.
